The government will invite private sector for addition of facilities at Gwadar Port under joint ventures to enable the harbour to serve trans-shipment trade in the region. This was stated by the Gwadar Port Implementation Authority (GPIA) Chairman Akbarali A Pesnani in his presentation at the 3rd Economic Co-operation Organisation (ECO) seminar on "Trade and Investment Information Networking in the ECO Region" here on Tuesday.

He said additional facilities would include berths, modern equipment like container gantries, port handling equipment and development of special economic zone (SEZ) at Gwadar port under joint ventures.

He said in continuation of phase I of the project, the government wanted to broaden and expand the utilisation of Gwadar port as a trans-shipment facility.

"The idea for making it a trans-shipment port has come from its ideal strategic location in the region," he added.

That would be in addition to the original purpose of the port to cater to transit trade, Pesnani added. "Under the new vision, Gwadar port will serve as a trans-shipment harbour, accommodating mother ships and catering to other ports like Karachi, Port Qasim and other harbours in the region."

He said Pakistan and foreign shipping lines would get the benefits from this port and instead of using feeder services from or to Dubai, they would use Gwadar port to feed other ports of the area.

Pesnani said the channel would be deepened to 14.5 metres.

Private sector would be offered to build those facilities on build-own-and operate (BOO) and build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis.

He said work on phase I was almost done and the port was ready for inauguration by the end of March or early April.

He said the port was equipped with modern infrastructure to ensure speedy transit movement and cost saving to users on account of shorter distance especially to Afghanistan and Central Asian States.

He said the port was linked to an effective road network, Karachi in the east, Quetta in the north and Iran in the west.

Similarly, airport facilities had been expanded and plans were underway to link Gwadar port with railways network.

He said the port also offered investment opportunities in oil storage and distribution, trans-shipment, warehousing, industrial and office space, transport and trucking and shipping companies, hotels, beach development, and power generation.
